Welcome to the September issue of the San Diego Participant Observer newsletter. After its summer hiatus, our Recipe of the Month returns with a recipe for absolutely delicious Greek Moussaka. Our Book of the Month selection is Whale by the South Korean author Cheon Myeong-Kwan. And our International Music of the Month is Chamame: Music of Corrientes by Rudi and Nini Flores.
On to the events . . .
All weekend long, the Sycuan Pow-wow will take place in El Cajon. The LGBTQ Film Festival continues throughout the weekend at the Museum of Photographic Arts and San Diego Natural History Museum.
Friday, there will be a Mezcal and Tequila Fiesta at the Lot in La Jolla. Fifty Years of Italian Music will be performed by Iris Moné at the House of Italy in Balboa Park. MiraCosta College will screen the Jee-woon Kim film The Good the Bad the Weird. Nepalese singer Sugam Pokharel will perform at the Dancing Yak. Cumbia sonidera band Los Angeles Azules will perform at the Viejas Arena.
Saturday and Sunday, the annual Cardiff Greek Festival will take place. At the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA, Afro Future Con will be held. At Dorothea L. Dance Place, there will be two days of Master Class Flamenco Workshops with world-renowned artists from Spain.
Saturday, at El Camino Memorial Park, there will be a Vietnamese "wandering souls" Vu Lan Celebration. You can take a walk around Chollas Lake and enjoy a Kumeyaay Ethnobotany Hike with a Ranger. The Midway will hold its 78th birthday celebration which will feature Multi-Cultural Performances. At Embolden Beer Co, they will hold a Taste of Japan event featuring Japanese street food. At the Chinese Community Church, the House of China will hold a Moon Festival including a BBQ meal, moon cakes, a lion dance and a raffle. A Fiesta Flamenco will take place at The Turquoise - Cafe Bar Europa. Reggaeton artist Arcángel will perform at SDSU's Open Air Theater. Yiddishland will screen the film The Yidishe Gauchos. At Otay Ranch Town Center, there will be a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. At Vallarta Bar Grill, Capri Show will perform.
Sunday, there will be an Indian Teej Celebration at Royal Banquet Halls. The Mexihco; The Journey Continues dance production by the Tierra Caliente Academy of Arts will take place at the California Center for the Arts. The San Diego Shakespeare Society will host an online talk with Dr. Rima Greenhill who will discuss The Role of English-Russian Relations in Love’s Labour’s Lost. A Spanish language Monologos de la Vagina will be performed at the Magnolia in El Cajon.
Monday, at the Mission Valley Library, there will be a talk on Frida Kahlo's Life and Art.
Wednesday, at the Gentle Penguin, there will be a Spanglish Comedy Night.
Next Thursday, the Digital Gym will screen the classic film La Bamba. The one woman play Dragon Mama will open at Diversionary Theatre.
Next Friday, at the Skyline Hills Library, there will be a Bilingual Storytime for kids to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. There will be a Mexican Independence Day Celebration at Chicano Park. At the Consulate of Mexico (in Little Italy), there will be another Mexican Independence Day Celebration with lots of live music, dance and food. At Sufi Mediterranean Cuisine, there will be a Lebanese Music & Fashion Show. Pacific Island Reggae artist Kolohe Kai will perform at Petco Park. The Digital Gym will screen the movie Nico. There will be additional showings on the following Sunday and Wednesday. Mexican grupera and romantic ballad group Los Temerarios will play at the Pechanga Arena.
Next Saturday and Sunday, the annual Viking Festival will take place in Vista.
Next Saturday, at the North University Community Library there will be a storytime reading of the children's book Lolo's Sari-sari Store. The inaugural Chinelos Music and Dance Festival will take place in Gompers Park. At the Gaslamp Museum, you can enjoy Aloha Saturday with Kanaka Davis. At the Japanese Friendship Garden, the annual Otaku Smash Fest will go down. At Market on 8th, there will be a FilAm CreatorCon Mixer. The Ould Sod will hold its Annual Irish Wake festivities with live music, Irish food, and libations galore. Colombian singer, songwriter, and actor Maluma will perform at the Pechanga Arena. Mexican singer, actress, and model Danna Paola will sing at the Magnolia in El Cajon. Mexican singer Edén Muñoz performs at Harrah's.
Next Sunday, the House of Germany will hold its annual Lawn Program. At Dana Landing, the House of France will hold its annual Summer Picnic. There will be an opening for the Miniature Treasures Chinese Tea Exhibit at the Chinese Historical Museum. The Hausmann Quartet will present their annual Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime program at the Maritime Museum. The film biopic Selena will be shown atop the parking structure of the Hyatt downtown. At the Iranian American Center there will be a reading of the Persian classic epic Story of Zahhak.
Local theatrical productions include Evita at the Cygnet Theatre, Cabaret, at the Old Globe, and The Savoyard Murders at Scripps Ranch Theatre.
